Oral Pathologies
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions affecting the mouth, jaws, and surrounding facial structures — from common infections and cysts to complex tumors and facial trauma.
The Procedure
Oral pathologies such as cysts and benign or malignant tumors can develop in the jawbones, gums, tongue, and other areas of the mouth. They often cause pain, swelling, or changes in oral function, and are typically identified through clinical exams and radiographs. Treatment usually involves surgically removing the affected tissue, followed by reconstruction to restore both function and appearance.
Oral infections such as dental abscesses are among the most common conditions treated by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Without prompt care, these infections can spread quickly and lead to serious complications. Management typically includes draining the abscess, prescribing antibiotics, and — when necessary — a surgical procedure to eliminate the source of infection.
